About us

Michael O’Sullivan

In 1878 Michael O’Sullivan moved from Henry Street Kilrush, where his mother Catherine (nee Murphy) was a chandler and soap maker, to Moore Street. He relocated his hardware and houseware shop within the street to our current premises in 1887.
He ran his successful business here until his death in 1909. The present owners are his great grandsons; John, Donal and Paul O’Sullivan.
The shop front remains largely the same today as it did in the late 1800’s and is noted in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (reg no. 20301223) for its architectural and artistic qualities. The interior is also largely unchanged. There are still two gas fittings and a gas meter in place; a remnant of when Kilrush had gas lighting. The gas company in Kilrush closed in the early 1920’s.
We still carry many of the same lines of stock more than 140 years later. In fact, we still carry all the items in the advertisement below, except iron bedsteads and knitting wool. In addition, we have an eclectic mix of gifts and homeware. We strive to retain the traditions of our family business while stocking a discerning selection of up to date Irish crafted gifts and home furnishings.
